Mad Max (Mel Gibson) is back in the desert in post-Apocalyptic Australia. He is attacked and robbed of all of his possessions by a mysterious pilot (Bruce Spence) but before the desert can claim him he stumbles upon Bartertown, a lone outpost of technology. Aunty Entity (Tina Turner) runs the town but shares power with Master (Angelo Rossitto) and his bodyguard Blaster (Paul Larssen) because they are the only ones who know how to run the system that turns pig waste into electricity. The only unbreakable law in the town is that no deal can be broken. Max accepts a deal to battle Blaster in the Thunderdome but refuses to kill him so Aunty Entity has Max exiled to the desert. Near death Max is discovered by children who inhabit an oasis and who believe he is their mythical savior “Captain Walker.” When the children learn of Bartertown some insist on going there believing it is Tomorrow-morrow Land where their missing parents live. Max sets off to save them from Aunt Entity and ends up enlisting the aid of the pilot and his son (Adam Cockburn).
